The University of Nevada, Reno led the Nevada System of Higher Education in funds raised to support this year’s United Way campaign priorities in communities across the state. Thanks to the leadership of President Milt Glick and annual charitable giving campaign Co-Chairs Cary Groth, athletics director, and Basketball Coach Mark Fox, University faculty, staff and students raised nearly $63,000—up more than 20 percent from the previous year. In a note posted to his blog, President Glick thanked his University colleagues for participating in the successful annual campaign. “Your contributions are an important investment in area nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the strength and vitality of the communities in which we live, work and play,” he said. “I was also particularly pleased to learn that our students hosted a special fundraising event (a charity date auction) that generated nearly $1,900 for the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra. In addition, we have two students—Tyler Harding (business marketing major) and Lisa Knight (journalism major)—who are serving as “community executives” (http://www.uwayreno.org/) for the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra. “A number of our students also are working at United Way-funded organizations, such as the crisis call center and the 2-1-1 helpline. This helpline also links Nevadans with expertise from nearly 100 organizations across the University.” |
